MORRIS JOKISCH AGED VIRGINIA RESIDENT DIES
Funeral Services To Be Held At Church Today
                Morris Jokisch, 94, one of Virginia's oldest residents, died shortly before noon Wednesday at the White Convalescent home. He was a lifelong resident of Cass county.
Mr. Jokisch was born near Bluff' Springs September 21, 1849, the son of Chas. G, and Elnora Carls Jokisch. In December 1874, he was married to Mary Musch, who preceded him in death on April 28, 1910. In 1880 he moved to a farm five miles southeast of Virginia and farmed extensively until 1927
                He is survived by nine children, Howard, Robert, Elmer, Reuben, and Arthur, of this city; Lloyd of Springfield, Albert, of Covina Calif. Mrs. William Allison, of Mason City and Mrs. Walter Way, of Goodland. Kansas; one brother, Edward Jokisch of Virginia, 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
                Funeral services for Mr. Jokisch will be held at two o'clock this afternoon at the Methodist church with Dr. M. M. Blair, officiating.
Mrs. J. S, Haywood will sing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer My God To Thee" accompanied by Mrs. Lyle Turner.
                Pallbearers will be Roy Jokisch and Ralph Jokisch, of Virginia; Earl Hackman, Morton Hackman and Lorenzo Burris of Arenzville, and Oswell Jisch, of Beardstown. Burial will be in Walnut Ridge cemetery.

Mary Musch was born in Cass County December 7, 1854 and died at her late home east of town yesterday morning. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church Rev. E. M. Jeffers officiating and interment will be made in Walnut Ridge cemetery
The deceased was married December 4, 1874, to Morris Jokisch and to them nine children were born, all of whom survive. They are Howard, Robert, Elmer, Reuben, Lloyd, Arthur, Albert, and Lena, all of this vicinity and Mrs. Grace Allison of Muskogee, Okla. The husband also survives together with twelve sisters and brothers. They are Frank Musch, Hartford, Kan.; John Musch, Chapin; Mrs. Lena Carls, Beardstown; Mrs. George Harris, Edmund Okla.; Mrs. George Cosner, Lake Charles, La.; Mrs. L. L. Savage, Ashland; Mrs. W. B. Conover, Lake Arthur, La.; Mrs. Julia Selman, Bloomfield, Iowa; Mrs. C. H. Bentley, Lebanon, Mo.; Mesdames Herman Carls and J. A. Thornborrow and W. H. Musch of this city.

The aged father, John Musch also survives. The deceased had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for thirty-three years. She was a member of the Martha society and a prominent church worker. She had spent her whole life in this community. Her last illness was prolonged and her death was not unexpected.

John. Howard Jokisch, 76, retired insurance man of Virginia, died Saturday night at the walker Nursing home following a long illness.
         Remains were taken to the Massie Funeral Home in Virginia and later removed to the family residence where friends may call. Services will be held at 2.30 o'-clock tomorrow afternoon at the Virginia Methodist church. Interment will be in the Walnut Ridge cemetery.
         Mr. Jokisch was born at Bluff Springs, July 29, 1876. He was active in organizing the Cass County Farm Bureau and later the Cass County Mutual Fire Insurance company, serving as its secretary for 27 years when he resigned due to ill health.
He also served as secretary and adjuster for the Country Mutual Fire company, Chicago, for 15 years. He was president of the district Mutual Cyclone Insurance company, Springfield for two years preceding his retirement
         He was a member of the Virginia Methodist church, the Masonic lodge, and served on many boards and committees during his lifetime.
         He is survived by his wife, the former Bowman, Mae XE "Bowman, Mae" ; four daughters, Mrs. Reta Pratt, Springfield; Mrs. John Ross, Chicago; Mrs. George Henderson, Tullula; Mrs. Crum Sinclair, Virginia; one son; John Howard Jokisch, Jr. Birmingham, Alabama; four grandchildren: six brothers, Robert, Elmer, Reuben, and Albert, all of Virginia, Lloyd of Springfield and Arthur of Jacksonville, and two sisters, Mrs. William Allison of Mason City and Mrs. Walter Way of Goodland, Kansas, also survive.

Mae Jockisch, 96, of Virginia, died Aug. 8 at the Jacksonville Convalescent Center.
She was born Oct. 9, 1883 in Cass County, a daughter of William and Emma Boatman Bowman. Her husband, Howard, died in 1952.

Surviving are three daughters, Rita Reathaford of Moweaqua, Mary Faetz of Mesa, Ariz. and Dorothy Sinclair of Virginia; a son John Howard Jockisch, Jr. of Plymouth, Mich. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and sister.
Services were held Aug. 11 at the Massie Funeral Home with the Rev. Allan Simms officiating. Greg Mahlandt was the Organist. Pallbearers include Ron Stevens, Robert Jokisch, Roger Jokisch, Harry Devlin, Dave Sinclair and Edward Mefford.

    Arthur R. Jokisch, 98, died Sunday, July 17, 1994, in Broken Arrow, Okla. He was born Aug. 29, 1895, in Virginia, the son of Morris and Mary Musch Jokisch. He married Monell Steinbrink, on Sept 23, 1916, in Virginia. She preceded in death April 29, 1989.
    He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James D.(Margaret) Sandidge of Tulsa, Okla.; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 12 great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Darrell; six brothers and two sisters.
    He was a member of the Church of Christ of Jacksonville He was a farmer for many years. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cody and Son Memorial Home with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call one hour before time of services. Memorials are suggested to the Church of Christ.

    Mrs. Jennie Margaret Jokisch of Bluff Springs, widow of the late Albert Jokisch, died at 1:30 yesterday afternoon at Schmitt Memorial hospital where she had been a patient since last Thursday.
The body was taken to Cline's Funeral Home to be prepared for burial.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 o'clock tomorrow night at Cline's Funeral Home.
    The body will be taken to the late home in Bluff Springs Sunday morning.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Bluff Springs Methodist Episcopal church by the Rev. J. D. Reed. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
    Mrs. Jennie Margaret Jokisch was born March 22, 1862 in Cass county, the daughter of Arnoldi,. Ernest and Amelia XE "Arnoldi,. Ernest and Amelia"
She was married September 8, 1880 to Albert Jokisch at the home of her parents, southwest of Bluff Springs.
    Mr. Jokisch preceded her in death in December 1947.
Surviving are six children, Arthur Jokisch, Mrs. Florence Bins, Rudolph Jokisch, Mrs. Tink, Alma, Jokisch, Bertha and Mrs. Clayton, Laura all of Bluff Springs neighborhood, 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Jokisch lived her entire life in the Bluff Springs vicinity. She was a member of the Bluff Springs M. E. church and was always active in church work.

Jokisch, PHILIP a practical young farmer, living on a beautiful farm of 140 acres almost all highly improved, and the same supplied with good farm buildings, was born on the Jokisch homestead belonging to his father, Charles G., in this township January 26, 1854. He was reared and educated in his native county. When arrived at manhood's estate he began farming on his own account. He is the second son and third child of his father, Charles Jokisch (see his biography).

Mr. Philip Jokisch had but limited opportunities for acquiring an education, but is a bright intelligent man, and has been very prosperous. His present farm has been improved by him and lies in the valley of the Illinois river. He has owned this fine farm about ten years and in that time has built the nice residence they occupy. The land has advanced in value since he bought it, and is now very valuable, and he has made his money by hard work.

He was married in this county, near Arenzville, to Miss Hackman, Sarah XE "Hackman, Sarah" , born in this county on her father's old homestead, near Arenzville, October 28, 1869. She was carefully reared by good parents and received a good education in the schools of the section, and at those of Jacksonville, Illinois. She is the fifth child and fourth daughter of Hackman, Fred and Minnie M. (Meyer), XE "Hackman, Fred and Minnie M. (Meyer)," natives of Hanover, Germany.

They grew up in that country, but came to this country when young and single, and were afterward married in Cass county where they began their married life near Arenzville. Here they accumulated a fine property of 400 acres of land. They are still living there and now enjoy the fruits of their labors. Mr. Hackman is not in good health, but Mrs. Hackman is as well as one of her age and after her life of hard work could expect to be. They are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Jokisch are members of the German Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a Republican in politics. They are the parents of four children: Oswell, Orin P., Viola E. and Verna M. Mr. and Mrs. Jokisch are good, reliable farmers, and are highly respected by all who know

OLD RESIDENT OF CASS DIES AT HER HOME

              Mrs. Philip Jokisch, lifelong resident of Cass county, died at her home in Bluff Springs this morning at 6:15 o'clock following an illness of several months.
              The body was brought to Beardstown and taken to Cline Funeral home to be prepared for burial, and will be taken back to the home in Bluff Springs Sunday morning.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon from the late home in Bluff Springs at 2 o'clock.
Sarah Lydia Hackman was born on October 28, 1857 near Arenzville, Ill., where she lived until her marriage to Philip Jokisch on February 7, 1884. Following her marriage she resided on a farm south of Bluff Springs where she has lived until her death this morning.
              The deceased was a member of the German M. E. church at the Jockisch settlement until that church was discontinued, when the memberships were transferred to the Bluff Springs Methodist church and up to the time of her illness she was an active worker in the Ladies Aid Society of which she was a member.
              Mr. Jokisch preceded her in death on April 14, 1928 and her son Orin on February 14, 1928. A daughter , Edna also preceded her in childhood. One brother Henry Hackman and two sisters Mrs. Minnie Winklehake and Mrs. Sophia Kors have also passed away.
The surviving are the following children: Mr. Oswell Jokisch, of Bluff Springs: Mrs. Viola Fiedler, Springfield: Mrs. Verna Thompson, Mrs. Inez Chambers and Mrs. Irene Seaman of Bluff Springs, together with one sister Miss Tillie Hackman of Beardstown and two brothers, Herman Hackman of Beardstown and Ed Hackman of near Arenzville, and nine grandchildren.

          Frederick Oswell Jokisch, 85, a lifelong Cass County farmer, died at the Memorial Hospital in Springfield at 6:25 a. m. today.
          He was born in Cass County on December 20, 1884, the son of John and Sarah Hackman Jokisch. He was married to Dora Welfare on January 1, 1925. Mrs. Jokisch passed away on April 20, 1945.
          He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bluff Springs and Cass Lodge A. M. and F. M. of the Masons.
          He was also preceded in death by one son, one granddaughter, his parents, one brother and three sisters.
          He is survived by two sons, John Jokisch of rural Bluff Springs, and Luron Jokisch of Arlington, Texas; two granddaughters, four grandsons, and one great-grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Chambers of Bluff Springs, and Mrs. Irene Seaman of rural Beardstown; also numerous nieces and nephews.
          Funeral services will be held at the Cline Funeral Home on Friday at 2 p. m. with Rev. Fred Harris of Jacksonville officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cline Funeral Home Thursday from 7:30 to 9 p. m.

Oren Jokisch Dies At Home, Near Bluff Springs, Last Night
Oren Philip Jokisch son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Jokisch residing south of Bluff Springs, passed away at 10:30 o'clock last night following an illness of six days duration.
        The deceased was 41 years, 8 months, and 29 days of age at the time of his death. He was never married and having made his home with his parents.
        He was taken ill with pneumonia last Thursday and has been critically ill since that time. Everything possible was done for his relief but he gradually grew worse succumbing last night.
        He is survived by his parents, one brother, Oswald, and four sisters, Mrs. Chas. Feidler, Springfield and Mrs. Wm. Thompson Mrs. Oscar Chambers and Mrs. Roy Seaman all of Bluff Springs.
        Funeral services will be held Friday, February 17th, at the home at 2 o'clock and interment will be made at the Jockisch cemetery.

                Hold Rites For Mrs. Ed Hackman, Impressive Services are Held At Home And Church Short funeral services were held at 12:30 o'clock Monday at the late home near Arenzville for Mrs. Ed. Hackman and were conducted from St Peter's Lutheran Church at one o'clock by Rev. Kenneth Bruno Newman.
Mrs. Tillie Schweer and Mrs. Edward Hunter sang "Lead Kindly Light," "Asleep in Jesus," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," during the services.
                Interment was made in the Hackman cemetery with the following casket bearers: Oliver Hackman, Rudy Meyers, August Hansmier, Julius Jokisch, Herman Lovekamp, and William Winkleman.
                Flower girls were: Mrs. Dora Hackman, and the Misses, Mary Janet Hackman, Annie Marie Hackman and Zelma Hackman.
                Jokisch, Amelia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Jokisch was born March 26th, 1859 near Bluff Springs and passed away at the Schmitt Memorial hospital in Beardstown, Saturday November 19. On March 8th, 1882 she was united in marriage to Edward Hackman, who survived her with five children: Morton at home, Orville and Elmer of near this city, Mrs. Cora Burrus and Earl Hackman of near Arenzville.
                Mrs. Hackman was a devoted member of the German Methodist church and attended regularly until it was disbanded in that community. She was a quiet loving wife who took a keen interest in her home and extended a hearty welcome to all her friends.

E. F. Hackman Dies; Funeral is Saturday
Lifelong Cass Countian Succumbs at Hospital after Illness
Edward F. Hackman, lifelong resident of Cass county and a prominent farmer in the Arenzville community, died at 5:30 p.m. yesterday at the Schmitt Memorial hospital in Beardstown.
More than 84 years old, Mr. Hackman died at the hospital after a six weeks illness. He entered the hospital last Friday.
                The remains were removed to his late residence in Arenzville township. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. K. Bruno Newman officiating. Interment will be in Hackman cemetery, northwest of Arenzville.
                Pallbearers will be Glen W. Davis, Virginia: Loren and Clifford Burrus, Arenzville; John Hackman, Wilmington; Edward Hackman, Arenzville, and Robert Farrar, Beardstown. The flower girls will be granddaughters of the decedent.
                Mr. Hackman was born Nov. 28, 1855 on a farm in Arenzville township, the son of John-Frederick and Engeline Meyer Hackman. He resided with his parents until his marriage on March 8, 1882, to Miss Amelia Paulina Jokisch. She died in November, 1932. He retired from active farming in 1914.
                He served his district as school director and as treasurer of the school board. For three years he was a district commissioner. He was member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are the following children: Elmer F., Virginia; Orville E., Decatur; Mrs. Lorenzo Burrus, Arenzville; Morton H. and Earl R., at home; one sister, Miss Matilda Hackman, Beatrice, Neb., and ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

HACKMAN, Edward F.

Edward F. Hackman, a farmer of section 26, township 17, range 12, was born at his father's home, in this county, November 28, 1857. He is the second son and fifth child. His parents were John Frederick and Inglebert (Meyer) Hackman, natives of Hanover, Germany, coming of pure German ancestry. They came to America in 1835, with their respective families. They grew up, were married in Cass county, and soon afterward settled on a farm in Indian Creek precinct, and later, they came to Arenzville precinct, where they purchased their present home. They bought from time to time, and made improvements, and now have a beautiful home. (For further particulars, with regard to ancestry, see biography of William Hackman.)

Edward was reared on his father's farm and remained there until he was twenty-five years old. He has since tilled his own farm. He has resided on the farm he now owns for eleven years, and last year, 1890, he bought it. It is a fine farm, and he has made many improvements upon it. It contains 240 acres.

He was married here to Amelia Jokish, an accomplished young lady, born and reared in the county. Since her marriage, she has been a devoted wife and mother. (For family history, see biography of C.G. Jokisch.) Mr. and Mrs. Hackman are the parents of five children: Elmer, Orville E., Cora M., Morton H., and Earl R. All are bright, smart children. Mr. and Mrs. Hackman are members of the Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church, of which Mr. Hackman has been Steward for five years. He is a Republican in politics, and is very prominent in politics.

Mr. John Frederick and wife have lived honored lives in the county, and their sons and daughters are a credit to them. The father and sons are all strong Republicans, and the former is seventy-five years of age, but he is in poor health, and for the past ten years has been retired from active business. He was one of the first members of the Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church of this place. His wife is also a member of the same, and is seventy-two years of age. They have eight children living: Wilhelmenia, widow of Henry Winkle, residing in Beardstown, mother of three bright daughters; Herman; Sophia, wife of M. L. Korse, a hardware dealer of Beatrice, Nebraska; Matilda is at home keeping house for her parents; Edward; Sarah, wife of Philip Jokisch; Henry, of the firm of Korse & Hackman, hardware dealers at Beatrice, Nebraska.

Herman Hackman is a prominent young farmer and stock-raiser, yet single, of section 30, township 17, and range 11. He manages his father's old homestead of 319 acres, and has run it on his own account for the past ten years. He was born on this farm, May 6, 1850, and was reared and received his first education in the county; later he attended a commercial school in St. Louis. He has always followed the vocation of farming, and is a hard-working young man. He, like his father and brothers, is a staunch Republican in politics, and a Methodist in religion.

        Helen Grace Hackman, 94, of Springfield and formerly of Virginia and Vandalia, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center in Springfield.
        She was born September 27, 1909 in Virginia, the daughter of Jacob and Lenna Way Davis. She married John Edward Hackman in June of 1937 and he preceded her in death on September 11, 1977.
        She is survived by one son, J. Richard (wife, M. Judith) Hackman of Bethany, CT; two granddaughters, Laura Dianne Hackman of New Canaan, CT and Julia Beth (husband, W. Trexler) Profit of Riverside, CA; three great-grandchildren; a sister Julia Lee "Judy" (husband John) Schaeffer of Springfield; two nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Glen Davis and on niece.
        Mrs. Hackman devoted her life to the care, well-being and education of children. She taught elementary school for many years in Virginia and St. Elmo. She was active member of the United Methodist Churches in Virginia and Vandalia
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.

Lorenzo Burrus, Prominent Arenzville Farmer, Is Found Dead at Vette Slough

Lorenzo Dow Burrus, 65, prominent Cass farmer who resided five miles east of Arenzville, was found dead at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon on the bank of the Vette slough, 4_ miles east and north of Beardstown.
The strain of pulling out a fish basket from the slough was evidently too much for his heart. He had been in failing health for the past year and had been under a physician's care. He was found where he had fallen back on the bank.
                  H. A. Beard, who resides on the Hager farm nearby and was in route upstream in his motor boat saw Burrus fishing at the stream at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning and talked to him. Burrus was interested in finding a good spot for a duck blind as well as in fishing. When Beard returned downstream about 3 p. m. he found Burrus dead.
                  Deputy Coroner Paul Harrison was called, as well as game warden Red Elmore and Cass Sheriff Nick Long. No coroner's jury will be held since Burrus had been under the care of a physician and the cause of his death was evident.
The body was removed to the Schaefer Funeral home in Meredosia where services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment will be in the Arenzville cemetery.
The family will meet friends from 7 to 9 p. m. tonight at the funeral home in Meredosia.
                 Mr. Burrus was president of the board of the Jacksonville Production Credit association, an office he had held for several years. Since the organization was started in the middle 1930s he had served on the board.
                  He was a member of the firm of Burrus Brothers and Associated Growers, producers of hybrid seed corn and was active in the Cass County Farm Bureau. Farming was his life work.

He was born near Arenzville. October 30, 1886. He was married to Cora Hackman October 27, 1909.

Surviving are his widow and three children. Mrs. Wilma Thrasher at home, Clifford Burrus of Arenzville, route 2, and Loren Burrus of Jacksonville, route 4. There are six grandchildren.
He also leaves a brother, Harold, of Fort Worth, Texas, and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Carls of Arenzville and Mrs. Ellis Brockhouse of Chapin.
He was a member of the Arenzville Methodist church.
Two brothers. Roy and Wilbur and a sister, Golda. preceded him in death.

Loren W. "Pete" Burrus, 90, of rural Jacksonville, died Tuesday morning, March 29, 2005, at his residence.
          He was born Feb. 7, 1915, in Arenzville, the son of Lorenzo and Cora Hackman Burrus. He married Marie Bertolino on June 9, 1946, at St Catherine's Catholic Church in Virden, and she survives.
          He is also survived by one son, Jim (wife, Mary) of Jacksonville; one daughter, Lou Ann (husband, Ron) Sweatman of Virginia; three granddaughters, Gina Holtz, Heather Viele and Angi Bobsin; four great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Clifford (surviving wife, Frances Burrus of Virginia); and one sister, Wilma Thrasher.
          Mr. Burrus farmed in the Arcadia area his entire life and served as road Commissioner in Arcadia for several years. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour and former member of the ATA in Arcadia He enjoyed duck hunting and was named the 2000 Conservation Farm Family of the Year.
          Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am. Friday at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with burial at Arenzville North Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, where family will meet friends following a 5:15 p.m. prayer service until 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Memorial Hospital Hospice or the Church of Our Saviour. Services held Wednesday for Mrs. R. Jokisch - Passes Away Monday At Barnes Hospital

Largely attended funeral services for Mrs. Josephine S. Jokisch were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in this city with Rev. T. C. Burton officiating. Organ music was furnished by Mrs. Otto L. Dour. Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Edwin and Clifford Sudbrink, Charles Caldwell, Gene Brockhouse, Elmer Jurgens, Eugene Clemons, Luren and Jokisch, John . Miss Betty Nan Anderson and Miss Louise Ruppel assisted with the flowers. Mrs. Jokisch submitted to surgery on Thursday of last week at Barnes hospital in St. Louis and her condition was reported to be satisfactory. On Sunday morning, she became worse, and passed away Monday at 4:30 a.m.

Mrs. Jokisch was the daughter of, Sudbrink, William and Janet Taylor and spent here [her] entire life in the community. She is survived by her husband, Jokisch, Roy, two daughters, Mrs. Adkins, Walter and Mrs. Davidsmeier, Russell , both of this city, two sisters, Mrs. Otto Wernsing of Decatur and Miss Mary Sudbrink of this city. She was a member of the local Presbyterian church and was active in its various departments, particularly the choir and the Missionary society. Her passing will be felt keenly by the entire church, as the well as the community

Mrs. Juanita L. Shinn Jokisch 80 of rural Virginia died Monday February 17th at Schmitt Memorial Hospital in Beardstown.

Mrs. Jokisch was born November 23, 1894, in St. Louis. She married Ralph Jokisch and he survives. Also surviving are a son Jokisch, Wilbur Daniels XE "Jokisch, Wilbur Daniels" of Tucson, Arizona, four grandchildren: and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, 2 p. m. at Massie Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Collisson officiating.
Pallbearers were Glenn Sweatman, Ronnie Sweatman, Don Huff, Gayle Smith, Martin Davidsmeier and Brian Adkins.
Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
